Lou Gehrig - RBI machine

Gehrig sits fifth on the all-time RBI list in a career shortened by the disease that bears his name. Furthermore, he is second on the single season RBI list behind only Hack Wilson's amazing season. He also has the 5th, 6th, and 12th marks on that list. So, one-third of the top dozen seasons in RBI production are held by this one man. Furthermore, remember that those marks were made before 1961, when baseball went from 154 games to a 162-game schedule. Furthermore, keep in mind that Gehrig batted behind Babe Ruth, who frequently was clearing the bases with his prodigious home run totals. In all of baseball history, if you had to pick a man to bat in the clean-up spot, it was the Iron Horse. Throw in his Hollywood good looks, deep dimples and boyish smile, and only the bigger-than-life character of Babe Ruth could have overshadowed his amazing career.
