Corn-fed basketball

For years I have made the comment that a lot of players from  Big Ten and other mid-western schools look like they walked out of the cornfield and onto the basketball court. I meant that as a compliment to them as big, broad-shouldered kids that did not appear to be particularly athletic, but who just got the job done through hard work and perseverance. Most of them probably were raised in cities and never saw a farm, but that is what they looked like.

Well, new Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard honest-to-goodness fits the bill. His parents operated a hog farm at Cobb, Wisconsin (pop. 458), and he grew up with the values that generally accompany such an up-bringing. I like it!
