Who knows? He would have faced the same talent loss and injuries that Wes has faced. And let us note that right now Texas Tech is 3-5 in the Big 12, so Beard could not have just snapped his fingers and had success here any more than he has been able to at TTech. Flanagan is 3-4, so at the moment he is a half game up from where Beard is. ("What might have been" is half the fun of being a sports fan.)
It is also worth noting that many successful coaches have not had an "in your face" style like Beard and Bobby Knight did. Wooden did not. Neither does Brad Stevens, and the list could go on a long time. Over time, sometimes the more reserved coaches do better than the intense coaches. Time will tell.
